What are the Charter & Code for researchers?

The University of Granada adhered formally to the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers in 2016. These documents of the European Union set out the guidelines for European universities and research centres to improve the employment and working conditions of researchers, making research more attractive in Europe.

The Charter includes 40 principles describing the rights and duties of researchers and of organisations employing and funding research. There are 4 main areas:

  1. Open, transparent, merit-based recruitment.
  2. Ethical and professional aspects.
  3. Working conditions and social security.
  4. Training and career development.

The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers includes a series of principles which should be followed by employers and/or funders when hiring researchers. These documents are addressed at both researchers and public and private employing and funding organisations. The implementation of the principles of the Charter & Code for Researchers contribute to a more attractive European Research Area.
